As a kid I remember dreading the end of summer. The end of summer meant it was…back to school! While there was a bit of anticipatory excitement about finding out who my teacher would be or which friends would be in my class for that year, the end of summer also meant earlier bedtimes. It meant no more sleeping in. It meant no more playing outside until dark. It meant the end of few to no responsibilities other than to just play. Is it crazy that as an adult I still get anxious as summertime strolls to an end? Although I’ve been out of school for (many) years, I find that I still feel a bit of dread as laid-back summer schedules quickly turn into the chaos of nightly homework and soccer practices, this time for my OWN kids. September, for me, signifies the true end of summer. However, September also signifies to me a fresh start. New sneakers, cool backpacks, sharpened pencils (with erasers still intact) and a new box of crayons still get me excited.
As an adult, September means it’s the kick-your-ass-back-in-gear-you-can-no-longer-be-lazy time of year. While many people see the New Year as their “fresh start” with new goals, hopes and possibilities, I see the month of September as mine. It’s the time of year that I get to sit down with my pumpkin spice latte (with coconut milk, of course) and plan out my fall and winter workshops (check them out here: https://unlimitedyoullc.com/workshops-classes/ https://unlimitedyoullc.com/moms-night-out/ ). It’s adjusting my work hours to accommodate the needs of my family. It’s appreciating crisp and cooler mornings and evenings. It’s the time of year that I feel most hopeful. Most creative. Most ambitious. While I can’t necessarily explain it, I just flow with it.
What would it take for you to make September YOUR fresh start? Instead of waiting until the New Year, make a list now of three things that you want to accomplish this month that you’ve been putting off. Make ONE small step this week (or even today!) towards getting it done. Sign up for one of my fall wellness-based workshops or “Mom’s Night Out!” workshops. Let September be your launch pad to getting YOUR ass back in gear. You’ll thank yourself later.
