Frequently Asked Questions
What is Life Coaching?
The International Coaching Federation defines coaching as “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.”

What are reasons that people seek out a life coach?
People seek out life coaches for a variety of reasons, but some of the most common reasons people seek out life coaching at Unlimited You, LLC is if they are feeling stuck in their life or if they are having difficulty overcoming fears and self-limiting beliefs which are preventing them from achieving the life they desire. Sometimes clients are seeking clarity around what it is they even want in their life.

What is the difference between Life Coaching and Counseling?
This is one of the most common questions people ask! While there is definitely overlap between the two, the easiest distinction for people to make is that counseling is often focused on past events which usually have caused angst or suffering while life coaching is focused on the future and overcoming barriers to creating the life your desire.

What is a “Discovery Session”?
A Discovery Session is the initial life coaching session, which can last up to 90 minutes in length. This is an information-gathering session which seeks to help clients gain clarity on their dreams, discover their superpowers (strengths), begin to set goals and identify barriers that can get in the way.

What does a typical life coaching session look like?
After the initial Discovery Session, life coaching sessions are spent reviewing goals, successes, progress (or lack thereof) and working through barriers. You will often be given tasks or homework assignments each session. The goal of life coaching is to move you towards the life of your dreams in the shortest amount of time possible. Once you learn the tools that work for you, you will have the ability to transform any part of your life!

Counseling vs. Coaching
  • Often focuses on past events which have caused angst or suffering (where you’ve been).

  • The goal is to get individuals back to a place of full functioning.

  • Most healthcare coverage covers counseling.

  • A mental health diagnosis from the DSM 5 is given to each client as a diagnosis is needed to help dictate treatment and so that the therapist can bill a client’s insurance.

  • In counseling, there is a therapist/client relationship.

  • A treatment plan with goals and objectives is developed with the client with the input of the therapist.

Life Coaching
  • Focuses on the future and what you want to accomplish in your life to make you feel happy and fulfilled (where you want to go).

  • The goal is for clients to THRIVE and live the life they desire.

  • Healthcare coverage does NOT cover life coaching.

  • No diagnosis is given to clients as life coaching is NOT a therapeutic service.

  • In life coaching, the life coach acts as a “partner” in helping clients to realize and achieve their goals and desires.

  • Clients develop their own goals to get them from a place of surviving to a place of thriving. The life coach holds clients accountable in reaching their goals.
